Jeremy screwed up the empty peanut bag and aimed it at the rubbish bin beside him. Wiping the salt off his fingers onto his jeans, he grinned at the computer screen. Yeah, it looked like the girlfriend was going to try on the bird suit. Sure enough, a moment later she was panty-clad, and hopping around on one long, bronzed leg to pull on a pair of tights. And Stacy sitting on the bed looking morose, not even bothering to enjoy the view.
He laughed, and thought about what look would be on Martin’s face, if he were here watching this. The guy would have to sit down to hide the boner. Jeremy had been around the block a few more times though, and while the kid was a looker all right, he wasn’t going to get himself in a dither over long legs and a cute arse. Especially an arse that played bump and grind for the other team.
The sight of her in the bird suit had him leaning forward in his chair though. ‘Holy motherfucking shit,’ he said, on a low whistle. It was her exactly – the chick in Martin’s photos. He caught himself shivering and gave a self-conscious laugh. He reached for his hip flask – a wee nip to help the hours – and on the grainy screen, Stacy dived under the bed. He hadn’t caught what had rolled under there, something out of her pocket, a bottle of pills or something. Whatever it was, she looked pretty desperate not to lose sight of them.
Eyes wandering back to Deirdre in her bird suit again, Jeremy shook his head. It was freaky. In fact, the freaky quotient was high on this job already. He’d come along expecting it to be mildly more entertaining than the usual show they did, and looking forward to a little more leeway for artistic camerawork, but he sure as shit hadn’t expected anything like what they’d gotten so far. He flicked his gaze over to the other screen, and checked the two cameras in the garage outside. The car sat hulking in the middle of the picture, and on a sniff he leaned forward and played with the remote camera controls, sending the picture zooming in. But the interior of the car was dark. Not even the shadows moved. He remembered pinwheeling back from the door of the car as the sparrows had burst forth and he shook his head. Freaky shit. Hadn’t he already said that?
The girls were having some sort of confab. Heads tucked together, both dark, though he didn’t really fancy Stacy’s new spiky do, and for a moment, Deirdre raised her head and scanned the ceiling, finding the camera and locking eyes on it.
‘Well hello, little lady,’ Jeremy said, and gave her a salute. She frowned at him, almost as though she could see him, and dipped her eyes to look back at whatever was fascinating the two of them. A slip of paper in her hands. Size and shape of a photograph.
